Green Supply Issues For Footwear Firms

Tuesday June 23, 2009
The goal of greening their supply chain has become difficult for manufacturers of footwear based on a recent report from Greenpeace. Footwear manufacturers have an increasingly fractured supply chain, with many different partners, so controlling green practices can be difficult, if not impossible. Many environmentally aware companies certify that the tanneries they use follow a well-defined environmental protocol, but Greenpeace has found that some leather sourced from Brazil originated on illegal cattle ranches in the Amazon rainforest that contribute to deforestation.

Footwear manufacturers use companies such as LWG and Bluesign to certify textile companies, but the Greenpeace report implies that some large companies, including Nike, Adidas, Gucci and Timberland, are not looking deep enough into their supply chains to ensure that their products were being made responsibly.
