Aircraft Manufacturer Outsources Logistics Center

Kansas-based Hawker Beechcraft Corporation (HBC) is in the process of outsourcing its logistics center jobs from its Wichita location, a move that will affect about 300 employees. The areas that are most likely to be affected include stock room, trucking and material handling personnel. HBC is in negotiations to work with a US based logistics company to take over the logistics functions and the transition will take approximately eighteen months to complete.

HBC has been working on this effort to outsource more of its functions and reduce overhead for more than a year. Union proposals to save the logistics center jobs were unsuccessful, similar to the efforts to keep the wire harness work inside the plant several years ago, when HBC moved the work from Wichita to an outside company in Mexico.

I worked at Beech for a long time until I got laid off earlier this year. The people who are losing their jobs have spend 10 or 20 or 30 years at the plant and then they find their job goes to Mexico or disappears altogether. It’s a very sad time. With Cessna shedding jobs, I can see unemployment in Wichita getting to record levels.
