New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced the purchase of a new type of hybrid electric-diesel sanitation truck and an experimental electric version of the Mini Cooper for use by city inspectors. He also said the city would study the electric vehicle market to find ways to get more pluggable trucks, buses and cars onto city streets. NYC’s goal is to reduce the amount of carbon emitted by the city government 30 percent by 2017 and the entire city’s carbon emissions 30 percent by 2030.

The city sanitation department added four hybrid trucks to its fleet, three hybrid garbage trucks from Mack Trucks and a heavy-duty hybrid truck from Kenworth Truck to haul supplies. In the private sector, New Deal Logistics, a trucking and logistics company, received grants to purchase two electric trucks for use in NYC and install a quick charge unit on each vehicle. New Deal will also test solar charging technology.

Why not smith electric vehicles who have been manufacturing trucks and vans for years based on ford Europe products. They reckon a cost of about £0.04/mile for city work. Ford have bought in the technology and I’m sure would kill to raise their profile as a green manufacturer. Either way it still sounds like European logistics firms are ahead in cutting their carbon output and running costs.
