Despite the rise interest in biodegradable drinks packaging the major players are still some ways from adopting it. A report on biopackaging from Zenith International, the British food and drinks consultancy, found that compostable packaging, rose by 47 percent last year, but still remains a very small part of the drinks packaging market.

Smaller drinks companies adopting green packaging are using compostable bottles, made from corn-based polylactic acid (PLA). Other options include biodegradable PET bottles, such as those manufactured by Arizona based Enso Bottles. Their PET bottles are biodegrade in anaerobic environments, such as landfills, breaking down through microbial action into biogases and inert compost leaving behind no harmful materials.
