Topeka, Kansas, could become the new chocolate capital of the US as the confectionery company, Mars, has announced a plan to build a new state-of-the art manufacturing plant. The Topeka plant will be the first plant to be built by the company in the US for 35 years. Mars North America has manufacturing facilities in eleven other states in the US and two plants in Ontario, Canada.

The first phase of the development in Topeka will be completed by the end of 2013 at a cost of $250 million. The plant will produce Mars' items such as M&M's and Snickers and employ over 200 by 2013, with the potential to employ 1000 after further rollout phases. The company has said that the facility will aim to be given a LEED Gold Certified designation and will meet all of the company's environment standards.
