Who would have thought that pizza making could be such a dangerous occupation? A pizza manufacturer in Watertown, Wisconsin, has been fined $76,300 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for nine alleged safety and health violations. The alleged offenses relate to exposing workers to an oxygen deficient atmosphere at its frozen pizza manufacturing plant.

Following a complaint, OSHA inspected the Watertown plant in June 2011. OHSA found that the company, Emil's Pizza, allowed employees to work in a liquid nitrogen cryogenic freezer without proper safety precautions such as air monitoring and respirator use. The cryogenic freezer creates the potential for an oxygen deficient atmosphere due to the buildup of nitrogen gas.

Martin,

I am glad OSHA is inspecting and taking care of safety issues in the work environment. What gets me is most companies will be able to save money over the long term if they have good safety programs. Companies just wont save money from fines but they will save cost in better insurance rates for better safety rates, the possible cost of medical bills they will have pay out for injuries, and money from law suits from people gettign injuried. Safety is extremely important in the world of Supply Chain Management.
