Fuel Shortages Across The UK

By March 30, 2012

Businesses and consumers alike are worried about a potential strike by tanker drivers in the UK, which will mean a shortage of fuel for drivers. The drivers are part of the Unite union which represents over 2000 drivers working for a number of fuel-distribution companies that deliver fuel to 90 percent of British gas stations. The drivers voted for industrial action as a result of a change in work conditions and changes to pensions.

In response to a potential strike the minority government has asked military personnel to take driver training classes to assist with fuel deliveries if a strike was to take place. Drivers are taking no chances and are stockpiling fuel, despite calls from politicians to refrain from doing so. Demand for fuel has been rising at over 170 percent per day since a strike vote was passed.

Lengthy queues of vehicles were to be found at gas stations across the UK, with pumps running dry at hundreds of locations. However the leading UK motoring agency, the Automobile Association (AA) blames the problem on the government saying the unnecessary and self-inflicted shortages are due to poor advice given by government officials.
