New Issues For Wal-Mart

By December 19, 2012

Walmart Bribery With the threats of Black Friday mass walkouts a distant memory for Wal-Mart, a new wrinkle for the company has been pushed to the surface again by an article in the New York Times. A series of stories have appeared detailing Wal-Mart's bribery scandal in Mexico. The story begins back in 2003 where local officials were allegedly bribed by Wal-Mart to change the zoning map to allow Wal-Mart to build a store close to pyramids outside Mexico City.

Wal-Mart were supposedly contacted by former Wal-Mart lawyers about the bribery, but head office killed off the investigation in 2006. The New York Times article also alleges that Wal-Mart facilitated bribes of $765,000 so it could build a refrigeration center in an environmentally fragile flood basin north of Mexico City. If found to be true, these alleged acts could lead to heavy fines by the Department of Justice, under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). So far Wal-Mart has spent $35 million its anti-corruption program, and $100 million on the investigation into the bribery scandal.
