The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing measures that will keep food safer as it travels along the food supply chain. The first proposal is to ensure that manufacturers of food that is sold in the US should develop a formal plan to make sure their food products do not cause foodborne illnesses. This will include manufacturing sites that are outside of the US, but where the items are imported. The second proposal from the FDA recommends a science and risk based standard for the proper harvesting and production of vegetables and fruits. This proposal would also cover the importers of food from abroad. Fruits and vegetables have been the cause of many outbreaks in 2012 including cases of listeria from imported cheese, e.coli from Spinach, and salmonella from mangoes, cantaloupes, and peanuts.
