USPS Raise Prices

USPS The United States Postal Service (USPS) is raising the price of its services, including its popular priority mail options. For small businesses this means that shipping packages is more expensive and firms have the option to pass on the added costs to their customers or absorb them. The new prices will take effect on January 27th and gives consumers a few days to purchase those "Forever" stamps to avoid the price hike.

The USPS has been asking Congress to raise the price of services as well as ending Saturday deliveries and reducing the number of USPS facilities. The USPS lost $16 billion in the last fiscal year but has fifty-five new initiatives designed to boost revenue and claw its way back into the black. Unfortunately, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), the new initiatives have only generated $173 million compared with the USPS's total revenue of $65.7 billion.

As a small business owner I am worried about two things – 1) That the price of shipping using the USPS is going up 2) That the USPS will fail. I try to support the USPS where I can, a lot of customers ask me not to ship UPS and use the post office instead, so I do where I can. But the USPS is failing, we see that every day, it is billions in debt. How long can they survive, and what happens afterwards?????

I’ve lived in the US for over ten years and I think the USPS is a great institution. Other nations don’t have a great post office and it would be a shame if the USPS was sold off piece by piece to other entities such as FedEx and UPS. it would be a brave government who ended such a wonderful tradition.

I really want to see the USPS survive, but I am unsure of what its going to end up looking like. I realise that Congress can’t bail it out every year, but I would hate it to be a three day a week, letters only type service, or a parcel service that was part of UPS.

Will congress save the USPS? I am not sure I certainly hope that they do. I would like to see the USPS to be an independently run body and not tied to the government.
