Apple Tries To Clean Up Supply Chain

Apple Supply Chain Reports today from Apple say that they are delving deep into their supply chain to weed out those Asian suppliers who are following policies of underage workers, sexual discrimination and paying employment agencies from workers wages. Apple says it has conducted nearly 400 supplier audits which are up 72 percent on 2011. In the past Apple audited their larger suppliers while small suppliers that manufactured parts sold to the major suppliers had been left out of the auditing process.

Despite the audits Apple still found vendors who were abusing the "intern" system and hiring students to perform regular duties. In addition 34 suppliers were found to be testing female workers for pregnancy and 25 testing workers for other medical issues.

One aspect of the Chinese workweek that is very different from the Western world is that there is a standard sixty hour week. Although 92 percent of Apple's suppliers abide by this, it seems as though that is one aspect of that US and European companies do not seem to mind exploiting.
